Waste charge in Spain (tasa de basura)

Last updated: september 2026

What is the tasa de basura?

The tasa de basura (also called tasa de residuos urbanos) is the Spanish waste charge. The municipality levies it for collecting and processing household waste.

Who has to pay the charge?

Anyone with a home or business premises in the municipality, resident or not. Some municipalities include the charge on the IBI bill; others send a separate one.

How much is it?

The amount varies widely by municipality. Some charge a flat rate per home, others base it on the cadastral value or water consumption. Typical amounts run from €60 to €250 per year.

Other municipal charges

Besides the waste charge, municipalities may levy more:

  • Saneamiento — sewerage charge (alcantarillado)
  • IVTM — vehicle tax
  • Vados — permit for a vehicle access point
