IVTM in Spain (vehicle tax)
Last updated: september 2026
What is IVTM?
IVTM stands for Impuesto sobre Vehículos de Tracción Mecánica — the Spanish vehicle tax. This annual tax is levied by the municipality where the vehicle is registered.
Who has to pay IVTM?
Whoever owns the vehicle on 1 January. Whether you actually use the vehicle makes no difference.
How much is IVTM?
The amount depends on the vehicle type, the fiscal horsepower (caballos fiscales) and the municipality. For a passenger car it is typically between €30 and €200 per year. Municipalities may apply a surcharge (recargo) of up to 100% of the base rate.
When does the assessment arrive?
Most municipalities send the IVTM bill in spring or summer. Direct debit (domiciliación bancaria) is often available.
