Understanding a Spanish letter

Last updated: september 2026

I received a Spanish letter — what now?

It happens to many foreign residents in Spain: a letter arrives in the postbox, or a notification comes through DEHú, and everything is in Spanish. Often you do not even know what kind of letter it is, let alone what to do with it.

ClaroSpain helps with exactly this. You upload the letter (a photo or PDF) and we work out what it says. Not a word-for-word translation, but an explanation in plain language.

What does ClaroSpain explain?

  • What kind of letter it is — a tax assessment, traffic fine, municipal charge, seizure order, and more
  • Who sent it — the Agencia Tributaria, DGT, your town hall, the Seguridad Social
  • The amount — if the letter states one
  • Key dates and deadlines — payment dates, objection periods, response deadlines
  • What you need to do — pay, object, request information, or nothing
  • Whether you can handle it yourself — or whether professional help is wise

Which kinds of letters does ClaroSpain recognise?

ClaroSpain recognises the most common kinds of official post from Spain:

  • Tax assessments (IBI, IVTM, IRPF, form 210)
  • Traffic fines (DGT)
  • Municipal charges (waste collection, sewerage)
  • Seizure orders (embargo)
  • Social security notifications
  • Letters from the Catastro
  • Immigration notifications (Extranjería)
  • Requests for further information (requerimiento)
  • Payment demands (carta de pago)
  • Administrative decisions (resolución)

What if the letter is too complicated?

If a letter is legally or fiscally complex, we say which parts we do and do not recognise. We advise when professional help is sensible — a gestor or a lawyer, for instance.

Can ClaroSpain draft a reply for me?

Yes. If you want to act, ClaroSpain drafts a letter in Spanish. That can be:

  • A request for further information
  • A formal objection (recurso de reposición)
  • A confirmation of intent to pay

Always check the content before you send the letter.
