DGT fine in Spain
Last updated: september 2026
What is a DGT fine?
The DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico) is the Spanish traffic authority. After a traffic offence you receive a notification (notificación de multa) with the offence code, the amount and a reference number.
50% discount for early payment
Pay within 20 calendar days of notification and you get a 50% discount. That is the fastest and cheapest route if you accept the offence.
Filing an objection
If you disagree, there are two stages:
1. Alegaciones (informal objection)
Within 20 days of notification you can submit alegaciones: an informal objection explaining why you disagree. Note: submitting alegaciones forfeits the 50% discount.
2. Recurso de reposición (formal objection)
If your alegaciones are rejected, a resolución sancionadora follows. You then have 1 month (30 calendar days) to file a recurso de reposición.
After that you can still go to the administrative court (contencioso-administrativo) within two months.
Points on your licence
Serious offences deduct points from your Spanish licence. How many depends on the severity of the offence.
